NUPW to press LIAT pilots’ case

Several months after LIAT pilots were sent home, they are still to receive any form of severance pay, but the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) says it remains committed to resolving the matter urgently.

NUPW president Akanni McDowall told the MIDWEEK NATION the situation had been desperate for many months, given the length of time pilots and other staff of LIAT remained unemployed.

“We have exchanged numerous communications with the Government and several meetings asking for urgent intervention. Thus far, the call for help has not [borne fruit] . . . and the situation is growing more desperate with each passing day,” he said.

Last June, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, announced the regional carrier would cease operations.

McDowall said LIAT was a CARICOM institution owned by four regional Governments, and the workers must not be left out in the cold to fend for themselves, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
