Windward Island Airway International WINAIR will mark a significant milestone this year when it celebrates its 50th year in operation.

The airline was founded in 1961 and operates three de Havilland Twin-Otter aircraft and two J32 commercial airplanes that connects seven destinations.

On Wednesday WINAIR officials, airline agents, media and other invited guests gathered at the Oualie Beach Resort to commemorate the airline's golden anniversary.

"WINAIR has demonstrated that amidst challenges, great things can be accomplished," TDC Manager Ernie France said.

"This year makes it 50 years since WINAIR has been in operation -- n entire lifetime for some and spanning generations. We are all aware of the many airlines that have come and gone, but WINAIR has demonstrated that despite the challenges, great things can be accomplished'.

Mr. France congratulated the airline officials and wished them continued success on behalf of his company, TDC Airline Services (Nevis) ltd.

John Hanley, Executive Director of Tourism, also offered his best wishes and commendations to the airline on the occasion of its half century of service.

"WINAIR is very important to Nevis and has been for the past 33 years," Mr. Hanley said. "Adequate air connections is one of the most critical factors affecting the survival of our destination and our tourism industry."

He said WINAIR has been providing a high level of convenience to locals and tourists, with direct connections to St Maarten and over a dozen major airlines servicing North America, Latin America and Europe.

The Premiere of Nevis, The Hon. Joseph Parry said he was proud to associate himself with WINAIR which was founded by a Caribbean man

"Ever so often we in the Caribbean doubt ourselves." he said. "We don't have the confidence that we can do anything lasting. Yet over and over again we have proven ourselves to be has great as any.

"I really hope we can get that message to all of our people that to be Caribbean is ok'."

He congratulated all the WINAIR executives, staff members and pilots the staff the pilots for a 'great job that you have done over the years.'

Edwin Hodge, WINAIR managing director, responded by saying stated that that WINAIR averages carrying 150,000 passengers between four destinations on 66,000 flights per year.

The passengers include 30,000 to Nevis who come to the island for shopping, medical purses or leisure time. The remaining 60,000 are on the St Barths route'

"Our future plans are to continue improving on our safe reliable service for the next 50 years and to attract the higher end tourist while keeping our company safe and cost efficient to ensure a high return rate to WINAIR and Nevis." He also said the airline is working to build closer cooperation with the major European carriers, LIAT and the North American carriers while keeping travel as an affordable cost to the people of Nevis'

He encouraged the public to 'be critical of our service and never become complacent to ensure that you and WINAIR continue to rank high in the service and industry with high honors.

"WINAIR is yours to stay."
